In my Rome Reflections newsletter 2 weeks ago, you’ll remember that I mentioned essencing a Rose while upon Palatine Hill. I was of course super disappointed that this time the Lupercal (cave of Lupa, where she took Romulus and Remus in Rome’s foundation story, & later became a shrine) was closed to the public for renovation. I got as close as I could, as I really wanted her to see the book I had written for her and offer the love and gratitude I feel for her, at her sacred cave. Eventually, I just stood above where the cave is, rather than in it.
After, it still did not feel like ‘enough’, I’d flown across Europe just to get to that spot, I mean c’mon!!!!
Frustrated I stopped to sit by this Rose that i was drawn to (pictures above) and while people rushed by, staring at their phones, i felt a moment of calm, peace and her loving reminder that ‘I am always enough’.
This is her message, as your Wolf Mother, that you are ALWAYS enough. Romulus and Remus came to her cave, not as kings in gold but as two vulnerable, screaming, nappy-pooping, babies and this is how the divine and nature will always receive us; as our messy, seemingly lesser-than perfect, not sorted-out selves. There is no high expectations, or rigid conditions; your intention, your love, your presence and willingness is enough for the divine 🙂
As i felt all of this, the divine spoke to me through the Rose and I essenced her . . .

This is the message of
~Palatine Soft Pink Rose Essence~
“Softness of the Mother.
I bloom,
even where it can’t be seen.
There is life,
always,
underneath,
a beginning,
hope in the darkness.
I emerge and blossom,
I bring my sweet scent and soft beauty where there is busyness and the haste of life.
Stop,
draw in my scent,
sweetness of the Goddess.
I am the nectar,
come,
bee to my bud.
Find me,
inside,
thorn and petal,
blood and love.”
You are enough and She is always there. Breathe in this message and know that it is for you also xx

I couldn’t get to Lupa’s cave but I did get to see her statue wooohoooo!

The statue known as the ‘Capitoline Wolf’ is a statue of the She-Wolf Lupa that is now kept in the Capitoline Museum. Back in the time of the Ancient Romans it was one of hundreds of statues of Lupa that were placed all around the city, celebrating their Mother and Protector.
The Capitoline Wolf is one of the very few that still exist (at least that we know of) and is the most intact of those statues.
She is, however, still the symbol of the city, and the image of this statue can be found all over, from football shirts, to police tape!!

The statue dates to the 5th century BCE and is Etruscan-made (more about the Etruscans and wolves in my book!). When it was made it was the She-Wolf that was solely created, as and for herself. She was the energy of the She-Wolf, whose epiphany in the legend of Romulus and Remus was a popular story told and recreated in art and story by ancient Romans, for the affirmation and celebration of their sense of belonging and identity. The Etruscans were known for their superior bronze work, of which the She-Wolf is a prime example and many statues of this period favoured bronze over other materials. From the marks on the She-Wolf it is believed that she was made from a cast.
Damage on her foot has led to her being linked to the She-Wolf statue in the Roman Forum that was struck by lightning in the 1st century BCE. The strike was noted by contemporaries as it was seen to be an omen of all that was currently happening, and about to occur, surrounding the activities and demise of Julius Ceaser. This connection, however, cannot of course, be proven.
The two twins were added in the Renaissance period, two thousand years later, to designate this statue as the Lupa of foundation myth. The style of the twins is attributed by some to Pollaiolo. Their addition to the statue transformed forever the ancient symbol of justice into “Mater Romanorum”.

🐺
The statue holds Lupa’s energy and looking into her face you can see the ferocity with which she protected Rome and its children, and standing under her you can feel her mighty motherly protection.
Visit her if you get the chance, till then enjoy and connect to her through my pictures and know that this is enough! I visited very much as her emissary to bring back her energy, images and wisdom, so that you can know her, be with her and feel her, no matter where in the world you are and no matter whether you get to Rome or not!
